Q1. What kind of facility is Southcoast Psychiatric?

We are a private outpatient psychiatric clinic that offers a variety of mental health services including medication management, addiction management, psychotherapy and counseling services.

Q2. What can I expect for the first appointment?

At your first appointment you will fill out a brief questionnaire that will go into your personal history and overall health. You will meet with the Doctor and express any symptoms and concerns that you may be experiencing. The Doctor and you will then establish a treatment plan which may consist of medication management and psychotherapy.

Q3. What is the difference between a Psychiatrist, Psychologist and Psychotherapist?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, unlike psychologists. Psychiatrists prescribe medication, while psychologists cannot. Psychiatrists diagnose illness, manage treatment and provide a variety of therapies for complex and serious mental illness.
Psychologists focus on providing psychotherapy (clinical counseling) to help patients. They can diagnose disorders and problems. Psychologists are also known for their specialized training in assessment and psychological testing.
Psychotherapists provide a variety of treatments and rehabilitation for people. Therapists can be psychoanalysts, marriage counselors, social workers and life coaches, among other specialties. A Psychotherapist’s goal is to help patients make difficult decisions and clarify their feelings in order to solve problems.
